  1. What is a municipality?
    A municipality is a local government area that provides services and governance to its residents. This can include cities, towns, and rural communities.
     
  2. How many municipalities are there in PEI?
    PEI has 57 municipalities, including two cities, 10 towns, and 45 rural municipalities. See list of municipalities.
     
  3. What services do municipalities provide?
    Municipalities offer a range of services such as water and sewage, road maintenance, parks and recreation, and local planning and development. View the Municipality Directory to find out more about your municipality.
     
  4. How are municipalities governed?
    Municipalities are governed by elected councils, which typically include a mayor and 6 councilors. These councils make decisions on local issues and manage municipal services. Visit our Municipal Governance page.
     
  5. How can I participate in municipal elections?
    Residents can participate by voting in municipal elections, which are held every four years, the next general election is November 4, 2026. You can also run for a position on the council if you meet the eligibility requirements. Find out more about PEI Elections
     
  6. What is the role of the Federation of PEI Municipalities (FPEIM)?
    The FPEIM represents the interests of municipalities in PEI, providing advocacy, resources, and support to enhance local governance. Visit FPEIM’s website at www.fpeim.ca. 
     
  7. How can I find out if I live in a municipality?
